Assertivness
Let's Talk Assertiveness
Assertiveness is a crucial skill to develop, not just for our interactions with others, but also for our own mental health. It's about expressing your thoughts and feelings in a respectful and confident manner.

Did you know that being assertive is different from being aggressive or passive?

Aggressiveness involves violating the rights of others to assert your own , passiveness is about ignoring your own needs to satisfy others , while assertiveness strikes a balance between the two - respecting both your own and others' rights and needs.

Why is assertiveness so important for mental health?

Studies have shown that being assertive is linked to higher self-esteem, fewer symptoms of anxiety and depression, and improved relationships and life satisfaction. It's about standing up for yourself while also considering the perspectives of others, which leads to healthier and happier interactions.

So, how can we become more assertive?

Learn to say 'No' when you need to

Practice expressing your thoughts and feelings

Use 'I' statements to communicate your needs

Practice active listening and empathy

Here's a list of great books to help you understand and practice assertiveness:

1. "Your Perfect Right: Assertiveness and Equality in Your Life and Relationships" by Robert Alberti

2. "The Assertiveness Workbook: How to Express Your Ideas and Stand Up for Yourself at Work and in Relationships" by Randy J. Paterson

3. "Assertiveness: How to Stand Up for Yourself and Still Win the Respect of Others" by Judy Murphy

Remember, being assertive is a journey, not a destination. It takes practice, but the rewards are worth it. You're worth standing up for.
