BBTRS
What is BBTRS?
The Method of Biodynamic Breathwork and Trauma Release® (BBTRS) is a new approach to body-oriented therapy. It consists of thoroughly chosen specific breathing patterns, conscious movement and dance, specialised techniques of touch and bodywork as well as exercises releasing tension from inside of the body, gentle emotional release techniques, exercises in self-awareness and meditation practices. Their thoughtful combination into an integrated flow allows the release of long-held trauma from the body and mind.
The Method of Biodynamic Breathwork and Trauma Release© was developed by Given Tonkov after over 20 years of exploration, learning and experience with clients individually and in groups. The goal of the BBTRS is to break through multilayer body armour, and by doing so also release the body, mind and nervous system on a mental, emotional and physiological level.
The result of the BBTRS can be a transformation of deeply-seated developmental, religious and social patterns. The Method allows one to experience the full spectrum of sensations and emotions available to a human being and at the same time developing their capacity to support and embrace a free flow of life energy.
Trauma Touches All Of Us
Trauma occurs when our loss exceeds our ability to handle and cope with what happened. The energy of the trauma gets stored in our body's tissue, causing a cascade of physiological reactions that progressively erodes our quality of life.

The 6 Elements of BioDynamic Breathwork
BBTRS® uses deep connected breathing to charge up the body, activating specific belts of muscular tension and emotional patterns. The sessions are designed in a series to stimulate and rebalance your mind and body from head to toe.
BBTRS® uses both somatic and creative movement exercises to allow vibration and release held energy in the body’s tissue. This may include fascial opening, core tension release and therapeutic use of dance. From playful warm-ups, to whole-body shaking, to undulating spinal waves, movement is key to what makes BBTRS® truly transformative.
The effects of sound on our nervous system are truly remarkable. It is one of the most powerful and supportive tools we can use in BBTRS sessions. With conscious intention and creative use, vocalization, recordings, and live instrumental sounds are a tremendous resource in sessions.
BBTRS® uses conscious touch at many levels, from the body’s energetic field to contact with core muscles. It’s applied with sensitivity to increase awareness and support energy flow. Understanding how and when to use conscious touch is central to all trainings.
Soft emotional release can be part of a BBTRS® session, but not a goal. You are supported to stay present while revisiting deeper feelings and sensations – and to return to your own sense of comfort whenever necessary. This balance is key to the BBTRS® approach. It supports you to release and integrate trauma, rather than simply relive it or become overwhelmed.
Meditation is where BBTRS® begins and ends. It’s used to support resonance in the practitioner and integration for the client. It’s also the resting state the mind and body often return to after BBTRS® sessions. Different approaches are used within BBTRS workshops and trainings, from active meditations, to sitting silently in some of the earth’s most sacred places.

Trauma & Symptoms
Trauma is real. It’s not just an idea, or a feeling of upset. Trauma is a physical reaction that becomes part of our bodies, a response to situations large and small. It builds and settles and takes up residence in our tissues over time, expressing itself in our everyday lives, sometimes for years. Trauma is what happens when our systems become overwhelmed, whether by a specific event or life circumstances. If we cannot adequately process and “clear” these epxeriences, then our lives can become unmanageable.
In the BioDynamic Breathwork & Trauma Release System® (BBTRS®), we combine successful somatic approaches with five other elements (below) to allow our natural physiological functions to clean out what was left behind by traumatic events. We trigger the body’s natural “emergency” responses, even when we’re not being chased by a tiger or threatened at gunpoint!
Modulating the breath is known to impact our emotional and physical states; it also changes how our nervous system functions. In BBTRS®, breathwork is used primarily to enhance the process of somatic trauma release, and supports meditation that integrates the work. In general terms, “breathwork” also can describe various breath exercises, and is a method to support the exploration of alternate states of consciousness. All of these assets are key to the practice of BBTRS.

- People under the influence of recreational drugs or alcohol.
- Pregnant women, especially in the first trimester, as the release associated with deep breathwork should be avoided.

- Severe heart disease, epilepsy, or a history of seizures.
- Mental illness, especially schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, and any condition that includes psychosis.
- Severe diabetes, although some people with very mild diabetes, and who are proactive with diet and medication, might tolderate BBTRS®. (Please consult a physician.)
- Acute physical injuries can be exacerbated by some of the autonomic movements in BBTRS®. (Please consult with a physician, physical therapist, or certified BBTRS® facilitator to determine if your level of healing is sufficient to
How it works?
BBTRS sessions typically last about 1 hour, and it can be done in person or online. On the day of your session, please ensure it's been a few hours since your last meal and wear comfortable clothes. Have tissues and water nearby.
During a BBTRS session, the practitioner will guide the individual through a series of breathing exercises and body movements designed to help release tension and trauma held within the body. The individual will be encouraged to focus on their breath and body sensations, allowing them to become more aware of their internal experience and release any negative emotions or memories that may be stored within. The specific breathing techniques used during BBTRS sessions may vary depending on the practitioner and the needs of the individual. However, in general, BBTRS involves deep, conscious breathing that is designed to promote relaxation and release tension held within the body. The session may also include elements of sound therapy, such as chanting or drumming, as well as touch therapy to help release tension and promote relaxation. Throughout the session, the practitioner will provide guidance and support to help the individual navigate any difficult emotions or experiences that may arise. The ultimate goal of the session is to help the individual release pent-up emotions and traumas, leading to greater emotional and physical well-being.We use resource to find safety in the body and the external environment. We use titration and pendulation to ensure that the client is never overwhelmed by their experience, simply exploring, releasing and returning to resource.
